|
Chairman's Message
The Department of English, since its inception, has come a long way and takes immense pride in catering to the needs of the students and striving for the highest standards of academic excellence. The department is not only helping students acquire a sound foothold in their English language proficiency but also engaged in running degree programmes in B.A. (Hons), M.A (English), M.Phil, and Ph.D.

The department is also blessed with a highly dedicated and thoroughly professional faculty which is all geared up to deliver their very best. It is indeed a source of our profound gratification to see our students joining civil services, working as journalists in leading English dailies and teaching in premier educational institutions of the country, this by all reckoning, is a no mean feat to achieve on the part of the department.

While designing the syllabus, utmost care is taken to tailor it according to the practical realities and market demands. We have tried to strike a harmonies balance between literature and language, subject like Creative Writing, Developing Writing Skills, Effective Communication, Linguistics, Phonology, ESP, Translation Skills, etc provide that necessary balance between language and literature. In order to cultivate a more encompassing and analytical approach towards literature subjects like Comparative Literature, Pakistani Literature in English, Modern Canadian Fiction, Islam and Modern Western Thoughts have also been introduced in our degree programmes.

Most of the extra curricular activities in the department are organized by English Literary Society (ELS). The office bearers f this society are students, who under the guidance of the faculty members organize a myriad of literary and other extra curricular activities. We firmly believe in the fact that such activities are instrumental in endowing the students with confidence and self belief. To give a fillip to the creative vigour of the students and to make their voices heard a magazine named ‘NEXUS’ is also published by the department.

As the department is bracing up to meet the challenges of tomorrow, we have set our gaze at erecting an academic edifice having its foundations in research. In this regard a conducive environment for research activities is what we are striving for.

Objectives
The Department of English Literature which started its journey way back in 1996 has by now come a long way. A goal, which, to many, might have appeared a very ambitious one in the beginning, has been achieved by the indefatigable and unwavering spirits of all the faculty members, who have been toiling extremely hard to achieve what was envisaged by the founding members. The department offers a rare amalgam of east and west, a phenomenon whose parallel can hardly be fund any where else in the country.

Subjects like Islam and Modern Western Thought, help the students to strike a harmonious balance in their thinking patterns, interestingly English literature and language, instead of weaning them away from their faith, as it is conventionally believed, help them to anchor and cement their beliefs in the universal aspects of life. Directing the youthful flamboyance of the students towards achieving something meaningful and productive has remained the hallmark of the department.

The department prides itself in cultivating self belief and unflagging desire to march ahead in the students. Grooming the creative abilities of the students has always figured in the top priorities of the department, this amounts to infusion of fresh blood in the ailing veins of our education system, which thrives on traditional methods.
